June 19 in 20th Century TV

First appearing on UK TV 30 years ago today…

1988-A_Very_British_Coup A Very British Coup is a television miniseries adapted from Chris Mullin’s 1982 novel A Very British Coup. The series was first screened on Channel 4 and won Bafta and Emmy awards.

It starred Ray McAnally as Harry Perkins, working class, very left-wing Leader of the Labour Party and MP for Sheffield Central who becomes Prime Minister. His priorities include dissolving all newspaper monopolies. Newspaper magnate Sir George Fison moves immediately to discredit him. It provides an intimate view of the machinations of a particularly British political conspiracy.
