40 years ago in Star Wars

50th_Academy_Awards.jpgToday in 1978, Star Wars won six out of 10 Oscar nominations at the 50th Academy Awards.

The movie was nominated for:

  • Best Picture, lost out to Annie Hall
  • Best Director, lost out to Annie Hall
  • Best Supporting Actor for Alec Guinness, lost out to Jason Robards in Julia
  • Best Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, lost out to Annie Hall

The movie won:

  • Best Original Score, by John Williams
  • Best Sound
  • Best Costume Design
  • Best Art Direction
  • Best Film Editing
  • Best Visual Effects

At the ceremony, Mark Hamill, along with C-3PO and R2-D2, presented the Special Achievement Awards to Benjamin Burtt Jr, for the creation of alien, creature and robot voices in Star Wars, and to Frank E Warner, for sound effects in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Future star of The Empire Strikes Back, Billy Dee Williams, presented the Scientific & Technical Awards.
